What is a Minor surgery room ? Requirements in the Design and Construction of Minor surgery rooms

Compared to major surgeries, minor surgeries are considered to be small, simple, and quickly performed. However, hospitals still need dedicated Minor surgery rooms for these cases. Let’s explore Minor surgery rooms through the following article with INTECH GROUP!

1. What is a Minor surgery room

A Minor surgery room is a specially designed room within a hospital for performing minor surgeries that do not require the complexity of  operating rooms. Surgeries in Minor surgery rooms are typically simple and small, such as excising subcutaneous fat, cysts, or fluid-filled sacs; scar reduction; eyelid, skin tag, or mole removal; or other minor procedures that do not require deep penetration into the patient’s body.

Minor surgery rooms are usually equipped with necessary medical devices and comply with hygiene and safety standards similar to  operating rooms.

2. The Difference between a minor surgery room and an operating room

Minor surgery rooms and operating rooms are two terms commonly used in the medical field. Although they share similarities, there are significant differences between the two concepts. Below are the differences between an Minor surgery room and an operating room :

2.1. Definitions

Minor surgery room: This is where minor, uncomplicated surgeries that do not require deep intervention into the patient’s body are performed. Minor surgery rooms are typically used for minor procedures such as sampling, bandaging, stitching wounds, or draining fluids.

Operating room: This is where large, complex surgeries involving deep intervention into the patient’s body are performed. Operating rooms involve procedures like incisions, organ removals, transplants, and reconstructive surgeries.

2.2. Equipment

Minor surgery room: Equipment in Minor surgery rooms is usually simpler compared to  operating rooms. They include essential medical tools required for performing minor surgeries.

Operating room: Operating rooms are equipped with a full range of appropriate medical devices for specific surgical procedures. This includes equipment to control bleeding, respiratory support, monitoring blood pressure and heart rate, and necessary surgical instruments.

2.3. Operational Characteristics

Minor surgery room : Minor surgery rooms are typically located in specialty areas, clinics, and hospitals where minor surgeries are performed. They can accommodate multiple patients and allow for quick preparation and execution of surgeries.

Operating room: Operating rooms are usually located in separate areas within hospitals, requiring careful preparation and precise surgical procedures. Each  operating room is dedicated to a single surgery and is characterized by cleanliness, hygiene, and high surgical safety standards.

In summary, Minor surgery rooms and  operating rooms are both places for medical surgeries, but they differ in scale, equipment, and priority of use in each case. These differences ensure the fulfillment of different surgical requirements for patients.

3. Important Requirements in the Design and Construction of Minor surgery rooms

3.1 General Requirements in Minor surgery room Design

Minor surgery rooms should have a square or rectangular shape, adequately illuminated with an area of about 15-20 square meters. They should meet widely accepted standards such as cleanliness, suitable temperature, good ventilation, and easy-to-clean surfaces. All movable equipment should facilitate cleaning. There should be space for instruments and a washing area.

To achieve this, the construction of an Minor surgery room  should have:

– A smooth floor without gaps or holes, made of fire-resistant materials.

– Sturdy, fire-resistant walls without gaps or holes and easy-to-clean surfaces.

– Sliding doors are optimal to minimize air disturbance in the room. However, swing doors, both inward and outward opening, with automatic closing systems can also be used, although they may cause more air disturbance.

– The ventilation system in the room should control the temperature from 20-22°C, humidity at 60%, filter air to remove microorganisms and prevent gas accumulation, and ensure rapid air exchange without disrupting the room’s atmosphere.

– A sink with automatic or foot-operated water flow and a soap dispenser also controlled by foot or elbow.

In Vietnam, acceptable conditions for Minor surgery rooms include tiled floors, tiled or painted water-resistant walls, air conditioning, doors opening in two directions, and sinks with foot-operated soap dispensers.

Minor surgery rooms do not require surgical isolation but must be kept clean. After each surgery, the room should be cleaned and wiped down, especially in cases of contaminated surgeries (such as trauma surgery). The room should also have ultraviolet lights for disinfection. If there is no medical waste treatment system, waste should be carefully packaged and entrusted to companies specialized in disposal.

3.2 Equipment Requirements in minor surgery rooms

Minor surgery room table

The operating table should be placed in the middle of the room for convenient access from both sides. It should be made of washable materials with adjustable height. In any case, the design of the table should provide comfort for the operating physician, both standing and sitting. Low examination tables should not be used as operating tables, as they may make it uncomfortable for the surgeon to work.

Minor surgery room Lights

For adequate lighting, the illumination should be at least 45,000 lux. Lights can be fixed on the wall or ceiling. However, mobile lights on wheels can also be acceptable. These lights should be adjustable, allowing for brightness and focus adjustments. Cold light sources are preferable, as hot lights can cause discomfort for both the surgeon and the patient, even drying out the surgical area. Available light types include Halogen, Xenon, and LED lights.

Instrument Table

A separate table is used to place instruments and other devices required for surgery. This table should be wheeled and adjustable in height. It should be placed near the surgical field for convenience during surgery. While minor surgeries may not require many instruments, having a table avoids placing instruments on the patient, which may fall, especially if the patient moves during surgery.

Minor surgery room Chairs

For longer surgeries, the operating surgeon will be more comfortable in a seated position. Therefore, having a wheeled chair with adjustable height is necessary.

Storage Cabinets and Bins

Cabinets are used to store surgical instruments and consumable materials. Storage bins should be appropriately marked to contain biological waste, sharp objects, and have a waste and wastewater treatment system according to medical regulations.

Setting up a Sterilization System for Minor surgery rooms

Any medical facility performing surgical procedures must have an autoclave for sterilizing surgical instruments or a contract with an outside facility for equipment sterilization.

Preparing Surgical Instruments for Minor Surgeries

Surgeons must understand the features and proper maintenance of surgical instruments. The quality, condition, and type of instruments used in any procedure affect the surgical outcome. Therefore, selecting the correct instruments for each surgery is crucial.

These are detailed information about Minor surgery rooms. Minor surgery rooms require professional design and construction units with experience to optimize and synchronize while providing reasonable construction solutions and saving costs for hospitals and medical facilities.
